Our Two Galleries

There are two galleries at Linwood Arts: Eastside Gallery, which is one of the largest in Christchurch, and the Mini Gallery, which is a fee-free space to exhibit in (more details below).

Committed to artist development, Eastside Gallery primarily encourages and supports the growth and development of new and emerging artists by facilitating accessible exhibition opportunities.

We are particularly keen on shows that collaborate with the local eastern inner city communities, such as our Centre-run “Inner City To East School Seniors.”

Exhibition costs are either free or kept to a minimum in order to ensure accessibility and our commission is a modest 25%.

Exhibitions typically run for three-four weeks.

All exhibiting artists must reside in Canterbury, drop their works off in person and attend the opening event.

Open calls inviting artists to join the group shows outlined on this page go out on our artist database (email arts@tewhare.org to join), on Facebook and Instagram (@linwoodartsandeastsidegallery) and on websites such as Artbeat and Arts Canterbury.

Centre-run Exhibitions

The following fee-free exhibitions are open to local artists and held annually:

Multicultural Exhibition – celebrates cultural diversity, held in conjunction with the popular Multicultural Festival in Doris Lusk, the park next to the Gallery.

First Steps – an exhibition for artists who are new, or nearly new, to exhibiting.

Te Whare Maire O Nga Punawerewere – Maori art exhibition, held to coincide with Matariki.

Inner City to East School Seniors – NCEA students from local schools between the Central City to the East of Christchurch. Held around August.

Progressive Pathway Exhibitions

We run the following exhibitions annually to provide a progressive pathway of exhibition opportunities for artists:

First Steps – Artists new, or nearly new, to exhibiting.

Stride by Stride – Artists who have a moderate amount of exhibition experience. This show sits between “First Steps” and “Eastside Spring.”

Eastside Spring – Eastside’s top show for emerging and mid-career artists. Takes place in Spring (rather than being about Spring).

“Stride by Stride” and “Eastside Spring” carry a small exhibition fee.

Selection will primarily aim to:
  • Facilitate artist development.
  • Provide exhibition opportunities, particularly for new and emerging artists.
  • Celebrate and support a diverse range of art forms.
  • Be culturally inclusive whilst celebrating diversity.
  • For Centre-run shows with a theme, the primarily focus will always be on how artworks respond to the theme.

Hosted Collaboration – Proposal Process

Individual artists, curators, groups and community organisations are welcome to submit exhibition proposals whenever they wish to. Exhibitions must aim to be at least six months in advance of the date you submit your proposal. We call these types of shows “hosted collaborations”.

A few recent examples of hosted collaborations include Waipuna Trust, Otautahi Creative Spaces, The White Room artists from Skillwise, the Morant Foundation, the TAFAN textilers, The Critique Group Christchurch, the Christchurch/Canterbury Cancer Society Art Group, Arts Canterbury, WEA Painters’ Group and many more.

We also put together shows in response to artist requests, particularly when an individual artist wants to join a group but doesn’t have one. We can help with the theme and put out an open call, so if you’ve got an idea for a group show but don’t have a group, or you don’t feel your art fits one of the group shows listed on this page, just fill out a Proposal Pack and let us know!

If you’d like to join one of the group shows listed in the exhibition programme on this page, you don’t need to submit a proposal. For these shows, you just need to respond when the open call goes out. The best way to make sure you don’t miss an open call is to join our artist database (email arts@tewhare.org and ask to be added to the database).

We will continue to offer the opportunity for artists to propose solo exhibitions, but the demand at Eastside is now so great, it would need to be a special show that very closely aligns with our selection aims and ideally is centred in some way around the Inner City East.

A four-person panel, made up of Linwood Arts staff, a local artist and a representative from Te Whare Roimata, selects the exhibition programme.

The Mini Gallery – a free space

Additionally, the Mini-Gallery is a more informal exhibition space suitable for new or emerging artists, or for artists who would like to see how newly created pieces “perform” in an exhibition setting.

Two wall spaces are available (3m and 1.5m) and there is also shelf space for smaller sculptural pieces.

It is free to exhibit here, although the usual commission applies on any works sold. If you’d like a 2-3 week booking, just ask by emailing arts@tewhare.org.
